Obituary For Donald Edward Pearson

October 28, 1936 – May 16, 2023

Donald Edward Pearson was born October 28, 1936, and passed away on May 16, 2023, at the age of 86.

Don lived in Hythe with his parents and siblings. As a young man (16 years old), he began following his passion of playing hockey with the Hythe Mustangs and hung up his skates in the late 60’s. He then worked at the Pontiac, GM and Cockshutt dealerships for many years alongside his father, Art, and his brother Bob Pearson.

In 1962 Don married the love of his life, June. Afterward he started Don Pearson Construction Ltd in 1967. He served Northern Alberta, the Yukon, NWT and BC. GSI then moved Don’s operation to Alaska, across the ice on the frozen ocean. The Alaska operations remained in business until 2018.

In 1977 Don, June and their family moved to Anchorage, Alaska. They resided there until 1985 at which time they returned to Hythe, Alberta. Shortly thereafter Northern Lights Ranch was established on the Cummings quarter just outside Hythe. This became home for individuals with disabilities, like Don’s son, Jamie. The residents call this home.

In Don’s lifetime, whether in Alaska or Alberta, Hythe was always his focus.

Don is survived by June, his wife of 61 years, his son Jamie, daughter Jennifer and grandson Matthew. He is also survived by sisters – in-law Christena Livingstone, Rachael Kivi and Nora Theilade, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Art and Ella Pearson, sons Sean (1985), and Darin (2012), brother Bob Pearson and sister Dorothy Peacock, sisters-in-law Marie Pearson, Maureen Brandsater, brothers – in-law Ed Peacock, Ken Brandsater, and Ralph Kivi.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Hythe Athletic Association, Box 182, Hythe AB T0H 2C0.

A Celebration of Life for Don will be held on Saturday, May 20th, at 2pm at Bear Creek Funeral Home 11802 99 Avenue Grande Prairie with Interment to follow at the Hythe cemetery after which refreshments will be served at the cemetery.

June, Jamie and Jennifer, I was so sad to hear of the passing of Don. He was truly a remarkable man, after watching the service on-line I learned so much about him which I had no idea about. Dad always admired and respected Don, he was a good friend to my dad. I have many fond memories of all of you including of course, Sean and Darin while we lived in Alaska. I remember the dinner parties, the ski trips and the outdoor adventures our families shared. Jennifer, your friendship while we attended Northern Lights school in Anchorage was very special to me! June you were a wonderful friend to my mom as well. I can't believe all these years have passed and we haven't been in touch... I would like to change that soon. I had to giggle when Don's niece mentioned his favourite song to sing was " hard to be humble". I'm always reminded of Don when I hear that song, I can hear him singing it during our dinner gatherings at your beautiful home in Anchorage. Blessings to you all during this difficult time.
