Obituary For Eldon David Shura

March 4, 1957- July 15, 2023

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Eldon Shura on July 15, 2023, at the age of 66, with dear and compassionate staff at his side.

A beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Eldon was the second child of four siblings, born to mother, Esther Shura and the late father, David Shura on March 4, 1957, in Grande Prairie, AB. Eldon grew up with his family on a farm East of Woking, AB. He attended his schooling in Woking, AB, from Grades 1-8, High School 9-12 in Spirit River, AB, graduating in 1975.

Advanced for age 5, Eldon, took a liking to being in the kitchen with his mom, learning how to cook his first dish, a fried egg, going on to note her many cooking and baking skills throughout years. His favorite to share was his Chinese stir-fry and chocolate cake and lots more. Through his school years is where Eldon acquired the love of many sports. He excelled in basketball, volleyball, badminton, and baseball with his main sports being hockey, golfing, and curling, where many awards were obtained.

Eldon was a great hunter, fisherman and trapper, with the curing and smoking of many meats, the making of his jerky and other recipes.

He gave his best tips and guidance when asked and always enjoyed readying for a party, playing board games, outside games, and dancing. He built and flew remote control airplanes and put on great fireworks for family events. He was so much fun to be around.

Eldon worked as a mechanic at Shannon's in Sexsmith, and at Spirit River Ross Equipment; and then took over the farming operations on the family farm in Woking, AB.

After suffering a stroke at the age of 46, Eldon was a resident at Mackenzie Place, L TC. In 2011, he transferred and then resided at the Grande Prairie Care Centre until his passing.

Eldon had fun teasing and being around staff, enjoying weekly recreational activities of his choice, the outings, many family gatherings, including ones out at the farm.

Every year there were his many phone calls to the farm asking how the crops were, and he enjoyed drives out with family to see the harvesting.

Eldon is survived by his mom, Esther Shura; sister, Leona Brown(Ted), brother, Raymond Shura(Jacque), and sister, Diane Hick; niece, Kashalee Hick, Nephew, Corrie Shura(Tara), nephew, Myles Shura(Shirley), nephew, Raymond Jr. Shura(Lierin), great nieces and nephews; Charlie, Koden, Carter, Autumn, Rory, Waylen, and many other relatives and friends.

Eldon was predeceased by his father, David Shura, Grandma and Grandpa Shura, Grandma and Grandpa Neiser, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Thank you to all the Grande Prairie Care Centre and Mackenzie Place staff, doctors, and recreational chaperones for all the care given to Eldon in the last 20 years.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 9, 2023, at 2pm at Bear Creek Funeral Home 11802 99 Avenue Grande Prairie, AB

Our deepest sympathies to Esther, Leona & Ted, Diane & Kashalee, Raymond & Jacque, Corey & Tara and families. Ted and I and our girls have fond memories of Eldon from hockey, hot tub parties at our farm, Halloween( One year Eldon didn't get to town for treats so he served homemade chocolate cake and moose meat to our girls.) Another Halloween, he let Marlene and I do his makeup and dress him up as a woman to be Ted's date and then we went out. He was kind, gentle, funny and will surely be remembered by all who knew him. -Ted & Sherri Grandel & Family
