Obituary For Laurel Anne Martin (Kirsch)

October 20, 1941 – June 27, 2022

Laurel Anne Kirsch, (80), of Grande Prairie, AB passed away on June 27, 2022, after an extended time in care.

Born in Cumberland, BC, to John and Valerie Martin, Laurel spent her youth with her two siblings Fred and Meredith enjoying the freedom and nature of the small town in which they were raised. Although she left Vancouver Island in the early 1970s and has resided in Grande Prairie, AB for the past 50 years, her spirit never left the lakes and forests of central Vancouver Island.

Laurel dedicated her life to her family and community. Working in real estate for 20 years, she showed us all what hard work and determination looked like and was proud of her successes and the clients she served. But with an empty nest at home after more than 30 years of raising children, she was missing her true passion, showing her love through food. With the opening of Laurel’s Peace Country Preserves in downtown Grande Prairie in 2004, many in Grande Prairie and surrounding areas enjoyed all the foods that brought her children and grandchildren much love and comfort over the years. Today, remember the soup, the canning, the biscuits, the rice pudding or the butter tarts, and the love in which they were made.

Laurel leaves 6 of her 7 children (Roberta, John (Susan), Valerie, Kyla (Wayne), Bridget (Karl), Erik), 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren here to remember to always choose joy and happiness, in all its different forms and configurations. She joins her son, Nels, her grandson Christopher and her parents, in eternal peace.

In lieu of flowers, or other generous considerations, we ask you to consider a donation to support any form of mental health that means something to you and your family whether that be Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression, or any other ailment that takes our loved ones from us long before they are really gone.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 3rd at 2:30PM at Bear Creek Funeral Home at 11802 – 99th Avenue, Grande Prairie, AB. You are welcome to join the family at Jackpot Grill at 10904 – 92nd Avenue, Grande Prairie, AB after 3:30PM.

I am sad to hear of Laurel's death I have great memories of working with her on several charitable and political events in the Cafe...hosting visiting politicians and helping several charitable initiatives Our last meal in Grande Prairie was the morning we left to drive to Jasper and then Victoria, we had at Laurel's .we all had her famous and incomparable breakfast sandwich. I am afraid that i have some responsibility for the creation of the cafe...some years ago, i was leaving my office and bumped into Laurel, who i had met years prior at the Framers market. She invited me on to see what she was doing in her newly acquired space...it was mostly empty except around the outside walls, where there were many shelves of jams, jellies and a multitude of preserves. I asked if she was going to serve coffee and rea....no she didn't think so,,,I continued by saying that there was no one else serving coffee on Richmond Avenue at that time...well a few weeks later, she tracked me donw and asked me to come and have another look....this time the space was full of tables and chairs and a steam table she had decided to open a cafe...nit just serving coffee and tea but a full cage as you know i had lunch there many times a week....honestly just about ever day! and several times a week i would also have breakfast, arriving some times before she opened and eventually she told me to just come n the back door...and breakfast would be served... the breakfasts, lunches the many friends I met there, the many groups that met there regularly, the business meetings...made her and the cafe famous in the city...every Thursday there were two or three women's group that would meet there which would along with some f us regulars would fill up the cafe Many friendships, many business deals were made there....she and that cafe very much contributed to building a wonderful community I will never forget those great days when she there hosting is all, hosting the community...i wish i was there so her children and grand children could hear this and know she was heard in high regard and love!
