Obituary For Marilyn Evelyn Balderston

August 10, 1942 - October 15, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Marilyn Balderston (nee McAllister) of Grande Prairie at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on October 15th, 2023 at 81 years of age.

Marilyn was born in Calgary, Alberta, and graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education. Marilyn was a well liked school teacher in the Sexsmith area. She travelled throughout the world and loved running into people she taught throughout the years. She enjoyed playing cards and would seldom complain about anything. Marilyn always looked on the bright side of life and could often be seen visiting and laughing. One of her favourite things later in life was to spend time with her grandchildren.

Marilyn is survived by her two sons, Chris Balderston (Pam) of Sexsmith and Greg Balderston (Nicole Mann) of Calgary and her 4 grandchildren, Mac, George, Leo and Evelyn as well as her Sister Reta Birkness, brother Richard McAllister and cousin Grace Ulmer.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers and staff at Prairie Lake Seniors Community for the years of care.

A celebration of life will be held at Bear Creek Funeral home, 11802 99 Avenue, Grande Prairie, on Monday October 23rd, 2023 at 11AM. Interment will be completed at a later date at Highwood Cemetery in High River.

Our beloved Uncle Telmer Napen met Marilyn when they were both residents of the Hythe Pioneer Home. Having been a bachelor all of his life it was wonderful to see he and Marilyn develop a special friendship and soon become inseparable. They even dreamed of getting married. I still have the beautiful handwritten wedding invitation Marilyn made for them to give to their closest families. As Uncle Telmer was always a part of our special family gatherings, so was Marilyn and we loved her dearly. She made our uncle so happy. He even danced for his first time ever with her at his great niece's wedding. It was a very special memory for all of his family. Thank you Marilyn for giving our uncle such a happy chapter in his later years. You truly were a special lady. Telmer Napen's Family

Marilyn was a great cousin, her Mom and my Mother were sisters. Many enjoyable days as kids out on the farm on the River Road west of High River riding and being terrors! Calgary Stampede week would see Marilyn, her folks and Richard and Reta staying ar my folks place in East Calgary. Nothing but fond memories of our times over the years and visits in Grande Prairie when I worked in the oil patch. Until we meet again ... love and missing you.

Chris and Greg and families - So sorry for your loss. Your mom and I shared many good memories from the days in school with her as my teacher and then as parents with children being best friends. She always greeted everyone so warmly, ready for a catch-up conversation. She leaves a positive note on all who knew her.

Marilyn definitely left a very memorable mark on my life, both as a teacher and as a friend. She always greeted me with a wonderful strong and sort of drawn out "well LOLA, ... how are you doing?". Her greeting was always very meaningful and it seemed like she cared so much for others. She was always interested in what we doing and what was new in our world. Marilyn had a cute little grin and her voice was full energy and positivity. She will never be forgotten. Condolences to her family.
